A subpoena is a writ from a court to compel witness testimony or to make someone (or a business) produce evidence. The court has a penalty for failure. There are two types of subpoenas:
- What is commonly called a "subpoena" orders a person to testify in court.
- A "subpoena duces tecum" orders someone to bring tangible evidence before the court.
